The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of various surgical, hormonal, and lifestyle factors on memory and attention in women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.
BRCA mutation carriers enrolled in a longitudinal study were invited to complete an online brain health assessment tool designed to screen for cognitive deficits. In total, 880 women completed the online cognitive assessment. The average age of the participants was 54 years (range, 23-86 years). The mean overall test score was 54.4 (range, 0-93). The individual subtask scores declined with age at test completion (P &lt; .0001) and increased with level of education (P ? .01). Women who underwent a preventive oophorectomy had a significantly higher overall score compared with women who did not undergo this surgery (55.5 vs 50.5; P = .01). Reconstructive breast surgery was also associated with a higher overall score (56.5 vs 52.3; P = .005). Chemotherapy and hormone-replacement therapy were not predictive of the overall score.
These findings are reassuring to high-risk women who undergo early surgical menopause for their cancer predisposition. Further studies are needed to evaluate cognitive function over time when memory deficits become more prevalent.

Screening for vasa previa is feasible and efficient, taking into account the site of placental cord insertion in pregnancies not affected by placenta previa and bilobed and succenturiate placenta.A one-/two-dimensional genome-wide association study (GWAS) strategy was adopted to investigate the genetic systems underlying the reciprocal adaptation of rice (Oryza sativa) and its bacterial pathogen, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) using the whole-genome sequencing and large-scale phenotyping data of 701 rice accessions and 23 diverse Xoo strains. Forty-seven Xoo virulence-related genes and 318 rice quantitative resistance genes (QR-genes) mainly located in 41 genomic regions, and genome-wide interactions between the detected virulence-related genes and QR-genes were identified, including well-known resistance genes/virulence genes plus many previously uncharacterized ones. The relationship between rice and Xoo was characterized by strong differentiation among Xoo races corresponding to the subspecific differentiation of rice, by strong shifts towards increased resistance/virulence of rice/Xoo populations and by rich genetic diversity at the detected rice QR-genes and Xoo virulence genes, and by genome-wide interactions between many rice QR-genes and Xoo virulence genes in a multiple-to-multiple manner, presumably resulting either from direct protein-protein interactions or from genetic epistasis. The observed complex genetic interaction system between rice and Xoo likely exists in other crop-pathogen systems that would maintain high levels of diversity at their QR-loci/virulence-loci, resulting in dynamic coevolutionary consequences during their reciprocal adaptation.The Community Balance and Mobility Scale (CBMS) has been shown to be a valid and reliable outcome measure for evaluating balance and mobility among older adults; however, some items cannot be conducted in all home environments, limiting its use in home-based assessments. Participants completed the full original CBMS, CBMS-Home (the modified items of the CBMS), the Functional Reach Test (FRT), and Step Test (ST). In pot condition, tetraploid plants tolerate water deficit more than their corresponding diploids. However, their tolerance mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we focused on which mechanisms (i.e., hydraulic, osmotic, or antioxidative) confer water-deficit tolerance to tetraploids. We exposed diploid and tetraploid Volkamer lemon rootstock (Citrus Volkameriana Tan. and Pasq.) to quickly (fast) and slowly (slow) developing water-deficit conditions. We evaluated their physiological, antioxidative defense and osmotic adjustment responses and mineral distribution to leaves and roots. Water deficit conditions decreased the photosynthetic variables of both diploid and tetraploid plants. Moreover, the corresponding decrease was greater in diploids than tetraploids. Higher concentrations of antioxidant enzymes, osmoprotectants and antioxidant capacity were found in the leaves and roots of tetraploids than diploids under water deficit. Diploid plants showed fast response in slow water deficit condition, but that response did not persist as the deficit intensified.
